China Memory Book Project

Launched in summer 2004, the China Memory Book Project aims at helping children cope with loss, stigma and other hardships and to preserve memories that might otherwise be lost in the tumult of AIDS.

Memory books have already been adopted by HIV/AIDS communities around the world, in particular Africa. These books are similar to “activity booklets”, in which children can explore, record, and come to terms with their personal histories, hopes and dreams including their relationships with and memories of their parents. However, while memory books have traditionally been made by the sick or dying parents, China Memory Book Project is unique in that the children are active in making the memory books. The guiding tone is understanding, but always optimistic. Indeed, memory books are about life and not about death.

The making and possession of memory books serve both practical and therapeutic purposes. Through child-centered art and story-telling, memory books are printed pages written to help the children deal with their extreme grief, worries, fears, anger and sense of alienation towards society which may have been resulted from the illness or death of a parent. Also, the guided memory books encourage children to take charge of their lives and most importantly, not to lose hope.
