Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2014

On the beautiful morning of Feb 16, 2014, 6 university students sponsored by Chi Heng joined many other runners and finished the 10KM race of Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2014.

The 6 students came from the provinces of Henan, Anhui and Yunnan. They spent an eventful and meaningful weekend in Hong Kong with our volunteers and supporters. They took their very first tram and ferry ride, had dim sum lunch, exchanged ideas and stories with Hong Kong students, visited corporations, as well as met with many Chi Hang supporters in the Spring Charity Dinner.

On behalf of the students, we would like to express our gratitude to everyone who gave a once in a lifetime experience to these students (In alphabetical order):-

HUGO BOSS

Pizza Express

Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited

The Hong Kong University - Gallant Ho Experiential Learning Centre

And all volunteers & supporters who have spent quality time with the students

Excerpts from the students sponsored by Chi Heng (in chinese):

Excerpts from supporters:

'Run for a Reason' - This is the slogan of the HK Marathon this year. We didn't mention whether we had a 'reason' for the run, but I do think that we have the same goal in mind- enjoy the run - and we did. I can tell from their smiles after they finished the run. Thank you Chi Heng Foundation(CHF) for organizing this trip. The students had a chance to explore HK through different activities such as company visits and this big sport event. My work requires me to collaborate extensively with CHF in Mainland, but actually this was the first time for me to join a sporting activity with them. I believe this trip was a special experience for both students and myself that will last for a long long time. Great work out! I hope the fellow students will keep exercising, and prepare for their next run!

Excerpts from HKOSA Awardee:

The sharing of the mainland students has helped me reflect on myself and I would always remember their words by heart. They reminded me that education was a blessing and we should never take it for granted. These mainland students are fortunate enough to receive education but there are still many children deprived of education opportunities in the mainland. Upon this realization I also understand as of now there is nothing much I can contribute to changing the fate of many, but I believe I may in the future when I have acquired enough knowledge. I wish all staff in Chi Heng Foundation and all the mainland students good health and continuous passion in their good deeds.

At the charity banquet, I had the privilege of sitting next to one of the students sponsored by the Foundation. He was gentle, soft-spoken and courteous, with an insatiable curiosity to learn about a way of living that is different from his. He also recounted his experience of running in the marathon excitingly, unabashedly telling us how much he enjoyed it. In the short hour that I was able to stay for, I was thoroughly impressed by the positivity of the students and the eager enthusiasm with which they approach life – almost certainly a positive result of the good nurture and support provided by Chi Heng Foundation. I was greatly touched by the spirit of altruism and selfless giving. Besides reminding myself to try to make a positive difference, here are a few words I hope to say to both the Foundation and the students: Persevere with indefatigable enthusiasm and you will soon see your efforts blossom and come to fruition.

Excerpts from volunteer:
This is my 2nd year taking care of the students from their home town to Hong Kong attending the Standard Chartered Marathon.  I must also say thanks on behalf of the students to all sponsors giving them the opportunity to see things beyond their birth place.  The students are from mountain areas of mainland China, and with the support of Chi Heng, they are able to continue their studies through university and of course they did put in a lot of efforts and hard work .  Having said that, not only  am I thankful to the organizers, I also  admire Chi Heng’s effort in organizing activities for the students beyond the Marathon while they are in Hong Kong. I believe this will give them the opportunity to see the world. For example, how a university is run differently from the one they are attending in the Mainland. Also, how a multi-national organization operates.  This will give them more inspiration on how to set their goal for the future.  Last but not least, there was also one very important program which is to bring them to see the beach!  They are from the mountains, and they have never seen the sea before!  You can see from their eyes how exciting and how grateful they felt!  Though getting up at 3am in the morning to bring them to the starting point for the Marathon is a bit tough, but having the opportunity to spend 3 whole days with them also gives me the inspiration that we all have to work hard on our goals, even though we could be deprived of certain opportunities.  I am glad I was chosen to be the ‘nannie’ of these students. I wish I could have this opportunity again in the coming years.
